brown, in for betty nguyen. we start this morning with football and the team with the most nfl titles has won another. >> the green bay packers have won the super bowl! >> it's green bay's fourth super bowl win. this time defeating the pittsburgh steelers 31-25. green bay quarterback aaron rodgers was named mvp. he led green bay to its first championship in 14 years. fans in green bay, the nfl's smallest city and the league's only community-owned franchise celebrated the big win. more on the big game coming up, including a ticket fiasco that left hundreds of ticketed fans out in the cold. on a much more serious note this morning, we go to egypt now. the government has agreed to some concessions. president mubarak still refuses to step down. it's now been two weeks since anti-government protests began. egypt's vice president met with the outlawed muslim brotherhood and other opposition groups. the protesters are adamant they're staying put until mubarak resigns.
terry mccarthy is in cairo this morning with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. the atmosphere in tahrir square here behind me this morning is still pretty upbeat. the protesters have been singing and chanting to keep their spirits up. two weeks after the demonstrations began, the protests continued. some came to shout, some to pray, one couple even came to get married. >> more than i can imagine. and it's more than a wedding. it's a dream wedding. >> reporter: after nightfall, gunshots in the square. the army fired in the air trying to control the crowd. across the city opposition groups met with vice president omar suleiman and the two sides failed to make any progress on the key issues of president mubarak leaving power and the dismantling of military rule. we don't have any other demands, says this opposition figure, other than the demands of the people. the upheaval in egypt may have left tourist sites empty. but in cairo, many banks and shops have reopened.
and people found their way around the demonstrations to get back to work. protesters say they're determined to see this out to the end. many people are impatient for life to return to normal. today is also the first meeting of the new cabinet. the government intends to show that they are able to bring things back under control. terrell? >> we're going into the third week of protests. now the two sides are talking, you think these protests can end without anything short of mubarak stepping down? >> reporter: well, terrell, there is a hard-core group of protesters in this square who say they will not leave until mubarak steps down. and they appear to be digging in for the long run. terrell? >> all right, terry mccarthy in cairo this morning. terry, thank you so. meanwhile, president obama addressed the pro-democracy demonstrations in egypt during a pre-super bowl interview on fox news. the president he didn't know if or when hosni mubarak would step down but he is sure of one thing. >> egypt is not going to go back to what it was. the egyptian people want
freedom. they want free and fair elections. they want a representative government. they want a responsive government. so what we've said is you have to start a transition now. >> he said he didn't think the radical muslim brotherhood would play a major role in the new egyptian government. the president admitted, though, the brotherhood is well organized and there are strains of their ideology that are anti-the west. in her first comments on the egyptian uprising, former gop vice presidential candidate sarah palin told the christian broadcast network that she was less than enthusiastic about president obama's response. >> this is that 3:00 a.m. white house phone call, and it seems for many of us trying to get that information from our leader in the white house, it seems that -- that call went right to the answering machine. and nobody yet has -- nobody yet has explained to the american public what they know. and surely they know more than
the rest of us know, who it is who will be taking the place of mubarak and -- >> palin was interviewed friday night. she said, quote, we need strength and sound minds there in the white house. the trial of two americans being held in iran on spy charges is under way. the trial opened sunday in tehran. it's unclear when the trial will resume. shane bauer and josh fattal pleaded not guilty. they've been held for 18 months. bauer fat tal and bauer's fiancee sarah shourd were picked up along the iraqi border back in 2009. they claimed they were hiking in iraq and if they crossed the border it was by mistake. shourd was released on $500,000 bail. she pleaded not guilty in absentia. wikileaks founder julian assange is scheduled to return to a british courtroom today. assange is fighting extradition to sweden. he's wanted there for questioning in an alleged sex crimes case. assange is accused by two women of sexual misconduct. american officials continue to try to build a case against
assange in publishing classified u.s. diplomatic cases. the extradition hearing is expected to last two days. a fast-moving wildfire in western australia destroyed at least 41 homes. the fire struck homes on the outskirts of perth. another 19 homes were damaged over the weekend. one firefighter was injured. the fire started when a man using an electric grinder in his backyard ignited dry grass saturday night. another fire broke out in the same area. two fires have burned at least 4,000 acres. the federal government has launched an investigation into a near midair collision in the skies near new york city. the american airlines passenger jet with 259 people on board had just taken off from kennedy airport headed to brazil. it came within one mile of two air force cargo planes. the american pilots steered clear after his cockpit alarm went off. >> if the aircraft were literally one mile apart, and we're talking about at the same altitude, that is extremely frightening. >> since march of 2010, airlines
have been required to report all near-misses to federal officials. at least six such cases are now under investigation. two men are under arrest this morning after a deadly fraternity house shooting in ohio. the suspects were charged with aggravated murder. the shooting happened sunday at a frat house at youngstown state university. police say there was a dispute, two men left the house, returned and opened fire. one man was killed. 11 others were wounded. several tanker cars carrying chemicals derailed in northwest ohio sunday and burst into flames. fire officials hope to have the fire out sometime this morning. no injuries were reported. about eight cars jumped the track, each carrying 30,000 gallons of ethanol. in all 28 cars caught fire. just ahead on the "morning news" on this monday morning, internet giant aol joins forces with a popular news website. plus all that glitters. charges looming for actress lindsay lohan in the case of a stolen necklace. this is the "morning news." he case of a stolen necklace. this is the "morning news." and i wondered what it was. i found out that connected to our muscles are nerves

a breakthrough on a new flu vaccine. scientists at oxford university have successfully tested a universal flu vaccine that could work against all known strains of the illness. it would not need to be reformulated every year, and it could end the need for yearly shots. the hope is that the vaccine might prevent an epidemic like the swine flu. "cbs moneywatch" time on a monday morning. stocks started the week mostly higher this morning. ashley morrison in new york with more. >> good morning, terrell. most asian markets started with some corporate earnings reports. japan's nikkei gained half a percent while hong kong's hang seng lost more than 1%. today wall street gets the very latest on consumer crate. traders are looking to keep the rally going after last week's gains. the best of the market in two months. for the week the dow is up 2.2%, while the nasdaq gained 3%. officials at the nasdaq exchange say no customer information was compromised as the result of cyber attacks. "the wall street journal" reported over the weekend the exchange has been the target of
hackers for the past year. but that the part of the system that executes trades was not breached. nasdaq officials say trading should resume as normal this morning. a high profile merger online. aol has agreed to buy the news website huffington post for $315 million. the merger will create a media group with combined base of 117 million visitors a month here in the u.s. and more than double that internationally. founder arianna huffington says she will stay on as editor in chief of all huffington and aol content. more good news from ford. due to increased demand, the automaker is stepping up production. ford says it's aiming to make 13% more cars and trucks during the first quarter of the year, and that further increases are likely. sales were up 9% last month. at the movies, "the roommate" crashed the box office. the psychological thriller
starring minka kelly and leighton meester scored the top spot. the 3-d underwater adventure "sanctum" came in, edging "the king's speech" for third place. and this year's top super bowl ads were for the dogs. according to "usa today's" 23rd annual consumer survey the top commercials for the big games were from doritos and bud light. both featuring canines at play. the doritos one was actually created by a consumer who said he made the ad for about 500 bucks. you can't go wrong with doritos, beer and throw some dogs in there. >> it all works out. >> a winner. >> ashley, thank you so much. appreciate it. on a much more somber note this morning, rock fans are mourning the passing of pining guitarist gary moore. he had a successful solo career in europe. he was a number of the irish band tin lizzie. he was born in belfast, northern
ireland and found dead while on vacation in spain. gary moore was 58 years old. actress lindsay lohan could be charged as early as today for allegedly stealing a necklace. according to tmz.com, lohan could face felony charges over the theft of the $2500 necklace. the jewelry store says she walked out with the bling on january 22nd. lohan says it's all just a big mix-up. >> lindsay insists she borrowed the $2500 necklace from the store, that it was given to her on loan. a lot of people do throw things at her to wear in public because she's photographed so much. the question is, was it loaned to her, or did she steal it? any new charges could be considered a violation of lohan's probation, and she could be sent to jail. coming up on this monday morning we'll check your weather forecast. and in sports, oh, say can you -- wait a minute. not ready. singer christina aguilera makes a little oopsy on the star spangled banner at the super bowl.

the new storm has started to shape up there and skies are clear throughout the southwest and into parts of the southern plains. later today, clouds in the great lakes will build up, move towards the northeast, packing rain and snow. the southeast can expect rain and thunderstorms. and freezing temperatures are spreading from the northern plains. high temps covering teens and single digits in the southwest, staying warm and sunny. in sports this morning, super bowl xlv and a musical misstep before the big game. ♪ what so proudly we watched as the twilights last gleaming ♪ >> singer christina aguilera flubbed a line of the national anthem before the start of the game, repeating part of an earlier lyric. afterward she said she got lost in the moment and lost her place. green bay packers and their fans are celebrating their victory in the big game. the steelers tried for a fourth quarter comeback but fell short and green bay hung on to beat pittsburgh 31-25. kendis gibson reports. >> reporter: green bay fans
streamed out of cowboys stadium celebrating the packers' fourth super bowl title. >> packers rock. >> i had such a fantastic time. >> reporter: the packers grabbed the early lead when aaron rodgers connected with jordy nelson for a 29-yard td pass. on the very next possession, nick collins picked off a ben roethlisberger pass, and ran it in to make it 14-0 packers. the steelers battled back. but rodgers and the packers never relinquished their lead. rodgers threw three td passes and was named super bowl mvp. >> it's a great feeling. it really is. just a feeling of accomplishment right now. >> reporter: but the day was not without controversy. temporary seats built for the game were declared unsafe, displacing more than 1200 ticket holders. >> we actually waited in line and then they treat us like cattle and tell us we don't have a seat after we spent all this money. >> reporter: the nfl found seats for 850 fans. 400 others were given the option of watching on monitors or
